Expansion of WWTP in Cala Baeza, El Campello
Background
With the construction of 127 new homes in Cala Baeza (El Campello), an increase in wastewater is expected in the area. This situation required the expansion of the treatment unit to provide a solution to the volume of wastewater produced in the area. Prior to the project designed by BlueGold, there was a wastewater treatment plant for 100 m3.
In view of the conditions described above, the needs are as follows:
- guaranteeing sufficient capacity to allow adequate treatment of the water,
- reinforcing the capacity offered by the current system,
- under the premise that for space reasons, it must be a compact system.
Our solution
In order to offer a solution that provides efficiency and quality in the effluent, factors such as the space available for the installation and the quality required were taken into consideration. Likewise, issues that could affect the operation of the system, such as seasonality of use and variation of incoming flow, were also taken into account. Taking into account the variables described above, the best option was an MBR membrane bioreactor, a technology that allows us to implement the equipment in a reduced space but that offers great results, even under disparate operating conditions.
In order to expand the existing WWTP, given the quality required, the most appropriate solution was the Bioxirec | Membrane Biological Reactor (MBR) system, located in a self-supporting container that allows its deployment quickly and without the need for civil works.
Being integrated in a self-supporting container, from BlueGold’s facilities, the system was ready to be moved to the final location and offer the quality that the project required with a speed that met the needs.

Results
The right solution is the one that is able to deliver the expected results but is capable of being adapted to the particularities of the case. Therefore, at the express request of the municipality when the project was commissioned, a grease separator was included. Likewise, a continuous chlorine doser has been integrated to reinforce the already high capacity of the membranes to prevent the passage of microorganisms.
The result is an effluent with a quality water that guarantees the deactivation and elimination of the microorganisms present in the water.

Benefits
The design created for the project allows to obtain a debugging system with the following characteristics:

A compact system with a smaller membrane biological reactor and no secondary clarifier.

Higher sludge concentration (MLSS: 10-20 g/L) than conventional treatment (MLSS: 3-4 g/L).

Efficiency greater than 90% for suspended solids, BOD5 and pollutants
