Water potabilization process
Water can be obtained from different natural environments (sea, rivers, lakes, etc.), or extracted from different sources such as well water. Prior to its use, the water must be subjected to a water purification treatment that will be carried out through different processes that will be guided by different types of water treatment.

Removal of oversized solids
The success of the treatment depends to a great extent on the capacity to avoid that residues of different sizes get access to the water purification system, producing obstructions and failures. This is where the roughing system performs its function, through a system of grids and sieves, it is possible to avoid with great success that residues or particles accompany the water during its course. The configuration of the elements that will compose the roughing system depends on the origin of the water extraction.
Grids
The roughing based on grids is differentiated by the range of passage that it allows, in its case it is between 10 to 50 millimeters. Those residues smaller than the size fixed for the screens will be eliminated by the sieves. We can distinguish two types of screens, those whose cleaning is done manually and the removal of the residues will be a task to be performed periodically by an operator. On the other hand, there are screens with automated cleaning.
Sieves
Sieves are a much smaller filtering system than screens, allowing the passage of water with a range of 0.15 to 3 millimeters, thus preventing access to smaller particles. Like the screens, the cleaning of the sieves can be manual, depending on an operator, or automated.

Removal of suspended and colloidal particles
Once the water has passed the first screen, corresponding to the filtering of solid waste, it passes to the next phase, where a combination of physical-chemical mechanisms eliminates dissolved particles that are in suspension in the water. This phase detects particles with a diameter of up to one micron, being eliminated in 95% of the cases.
Coagulation-flocculation
Coagulation-flocculation is a chemical process prior to filtration to facilitate particle removal. In this process, particles are agglutinated, thus forming a complex mass that is easier to detect and remove.
Microfiltration
Microfiltration allows us to remove contaminants present in a fluid. Through a microporous membrane with a range of 0.1 to 1 micron, we achieve water free of organic matter, colloids, bacteria and viruses.
Filtration
Filtration is the last step in the process of removing suspended particles from the water. The water circulates through a porous medium that can be sand or activated carbon and manages to remove those unwanted particles that are still in the water.
Ultrafiltration
Ultrafiltration of water offers us a high purity water saving space and without the use of chemicals. The water passes through a system of membranes, in which particles of up to 0.03 microns are detained.

Removal of dissolved solids
In water, matter is present in different forms and a special case is that of dissolved solids. These are practically imperceptible particles, but they affect the use of water for domestic, agricultural and industrial purposes, as well as their responsibility to the environment. Among them we find: salts, chlorides, phosphates, etcetera. For the water to maintain a suitable standard, it is necessary to apply an adequate treatment.
Reverse osmosis
Through reverse osmosis, it reduces the concentration of salts and dissolved solids. The combination of water pressure and a system of multiple porous membranes facilitates the removal of 99% of salts and other residues such as organic contaminants.
Ion Exchange
Ion exchange is the most effective way to replace unwanted ions with similar ones, through a water softening or deionization treatment, mineral content is eliminated by replacing calcium and magnesium present in the water with sodium.
Nanofiltration
Nanofiltration is a process by which water is separated at the molecular level using a membrane to remove particles between 0.1 nano millimeters and 0.001 micro millimeters in size. It has several uses such as the elimination of pesticides, heavy metals present in the water or the elimination of nitrates.

Disinfection
In the last phase of the water purification process, pathogenic microorganisms that may still be present in the water are eliminated by chemical treatment.
Oxidation with Chlorine
This is the most common form of disinfection. Chlorine is the most effective chemical form to eliminate microorganisms that may be present in the water thanks to its oxidizing capacity, which effectively suppresses the bacteria found in the water.
Ozone
With a higher oxidizing power than chlorine, ozone eliminates bacteria and viruses as well as other types of microorganisms with a lower concentration and time requirement but with equally effective results.
Ultraviolet
By means of a system of light lamps submerged in the water, the ultraviolet light affects the DNA of any microorganisms present in the water, thus rendering them unable to reproduce and eliminating any possibility of infection. Without impacting the water as it does not require chemical treatment, it offers a concise solution to the regulations.

Post-treatment
Post-treatment must be carried out after the drinking water treatment, which will adapt the conditions of the water to the different uses to which it may be put. It is necessary to carry out a correct post-treatment design since, if this does not take place, the water may not meet the necessary conditions. For example, an excessively pure water for industrial use would have a high rate of corrosion, while in water for human consumption, a water without a minimum of hardness would be unhealthy.
Remineralization
It is the process that allows us to reach an optimum level of hardness and alkalinity, and it also has the effect of improving the taste of the water, protecting the water treatment facilities by preventing corrosion and having a positive impact on the consumer’s health.
pH control
The importance of pH control lies in how it influences water treatment processes. Maintaining an optimum pH level is necessary for pollution control and neutralization of industrial wastes and essential for drinking water.
