Wastewater treatment stages
The treatment of water, be it rainwater (adaptation of a rainwater treatment system), industrial water (treatment of water coming from industrial effluents) or urban water (treatment of both greywater and sewage), aims at eradicating unwanted matter.
Wastewater purification treatments
This is actually achieved as a result of four stages, including physical, chemical and biological processes. Consequently, in this way, a water of quality and free of matter or microorganisms is finally obtained.
Pretreatment
The pretreatment allows us to exclude solid matter that may be present in the water, facilitating the purification of contaminated water and wastewater. Through a complex system of grids and sieves, we achieve an efficient roughing process in which we extract from the water that matter which may be present in the water and whose access to the equipment would consequently damage the installation.
Secondary stage
In this phase, we find processes based on aerobic and anaerobic treatments. Therefore, this summarizes a biological treatment where the water, after passing through the previous stage, allows the complete elimination of those organic residues that were still present in the water through a natural process thanks to the action of certain microorganisms. These, mainly bacteria and protozoa, favor the elimination of the organic matter dissolved in the water under treatment.
Primary stage
Primary treatment is characterized by the removal of suspended solids that may be found in the water. Therefore, we are dealing with a physical and chemical treatment with four distinct phases: sedimentation (gravity force), flotation, coagulation-flocculation and filtration (by means of sand or activated carbon filters).
Tertiary stage
This third phase comes to further adapt the water for its subsequent discharge. Although after the second phase it is considered suitable for release, however, in the third phase different actions are carried out, such as the elimination of pathogens, among others. In this process, the quality of the water is further optimized by showing a lower presence of pollutants, thus collaborating in this way so that the discharges present a substantially lower amount of polluta
Wastewater treatment technologies
Industrial waters can be of very different types depending on the activity in which they originate, therefore, they require an individualized treatment. Due to an increasingly strict legal environment and with European, national and provincial legislation, it is essential to offer the best technical solution that complies with the regulations with an adequate integration in the environment and at a low cost. That is why non-conventional treatments are the best alternative for those populations or industries with a small size.
MBR | Membrane BioReactors
By means of a system that simultaneously performs a process of biological degradation and filtration, we obtain in this way, the practical suppression of particles or microorganisms in suspension. A membrane system that retains particles between 0.01 and 0.1 µm is in charge of the retention during this phase.
We can distinguish two types of membranes that define an MBR system: microfiltration and ultrafiltration. Apart from the type of membrane, another characteristic that will define the system will be whether the membrane is located inside the reactor or, on the contrary, outside. The external or internal arrangement of the membrane will therefore also affect various factors such as aeration costs, pumping costs or cleaning frequency.
Benefits of MBR:
- Facilitates operation with a higher concentration of solids.
- Reduced installation.
- Stability superior to the conventional one.
- Higher quality effluent.
- Greater use of the resource. Effluent can be reused in a direct way.
MBBR Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor
This is a biological process that, through mobile supports, generates biofilms of active microorganisms. During the process, they are in continuous movement through the reactor thanks to aeration. An air flow allows, in this way, that the movement of these elements is continuous through the reactor with the only need for optimal conditions of movement and oxidation.
There are several types of fillers to be used in a treatment with MBBR technology. For example, Linpor, Levapor and Kaldnes but not the only ones. However, it can be seen that different fillers have different compositions, whereas Linpor is based on a polyurethane sponge, Kaldnes is essentially formed from polyethylene and Linpor has a large activated carbon base.
Benefits of MBBR:
- Compact space thanks to a biological reactor with high biomass concentration.
- Reduced maintenance costs and personnel.
- Unlike other systems, no recirculation process is necessary.
- Adaptation to the flow rate as it is possible to change its volume in the reactor.
SBR | Sequencing Batch Reactors
The sequential biological reactor process is a procedure that combines different processes such as: filling, aeration, anoxia, decantation and emptying in the form of effluent as well as sludge. In addition, it also supports variations in flow rate and, consequently, results in stabilized sludge, making it, in certain cases, the ideal model for industry.
This is a process in which the water is combined with a biological sludge, thus dispensing with secondary settling tanks, since the clarification phase takes place at the same time as the biological degradation and also the transformation of compounds.
Benefits of SBR:
- Savings in equipment investment due to the lack of settling tanks and other systems.
- Efficient equipment in a reduced space, since only one tank is required to carry out the process.
- Resistance to temperature oscillations by being able to control when the cycles are carried out.
